Current marketing techniques have changed so much that helped the artists to promote their market to niche consumers. An example would be Nicki Minaj who has a particular style, particular personality, songs etc. who markets herself in a particular way.
Nicki Minaj who is an American rapper, singer and songwriter who is known for her rapping skills, her attitude through songs, her style, the way she performs on stage. This left many audiences know straight away whether they like her or not as she had a niche market. The way she markets herself makes it clear to see who she is and what her personality is like.
Marketing is the part of the process where you start to reach the audience by promoting the artist in an appealing way to make them look as good as possible to attract many people towards that artist. Examples include television commercials, posters, websites, music videos, press advertisements and radio promotion.

This album represent Nicki Minaj as a crazy person who likes to experiment with things for example the fact that her legs are edited to make them seem longer. Straight away she represents her own style through that.
This music video shows Nicki Minaj’s style and how she likes to be seen as the representing images are shown in a certain way. The same example is ‘Starships’ where the videos are very similar.

MARKETING
1) Music selection:
The very important thing in the music video production is to select particular songs to go in an album as well as some of the released singles. On the album the amount of songs may vary from 5-15 depending on the album and depending on what the artist wants.
Many artist put around 10 songs on an album and release it, when they see that their album is selling quite good, they add around three more songs which is why sometimes some albums may have ‘edition’ written on it.

PRODUCTION:

2) Album development:
When starting the album development, it includes the recorded vocals, combining the instrumentals and the editing; it also includes the selection of singles as well as the decision of the order of the songs. Once this is done it may be ready to be copied and published on CDs and MP3 files.

3) Music video singles selection:
Once the product has been finished, there is a song/s that are chosen to promote the album and these songs are then used as singles that then are used to make a promotional video. There is usually a short number of singles to minimise the costs, however artists do make music videos for almost all of their songs to promote their music. An example of an artist that done that is Michael Jackson, he made music videos to almost all of his songs that he has ever made.
DISTRIBUTION
Distribution is the part where you share your finished product working with a record label. Record labels promote the artist and their music through music watches, agencies or business connections, they’re also the owners to give rights of the distribution and recordings which they develop music recordings. They take the responsibility of the release of the product, the advertisement and the distribution.
Within the record label there are:
-
Directors and Artists
-
Marketing, sales and publicity team
-
Technical staff
-
Managerial roles
-
Finance department, revenue and costs managers.
-
Senior staff i.e. CEO and legal department

EXHIBITION
Exhibition is the public display of the song, artist and the music video which is the last stage of the process. There are many companies that exhibit the items and the example I will be using will be Vevo.
